A little cedar “safe house” for the neighborhood chaos gremlins
I got this squirrel house after I started following Emma the squirrel and saw her grab her little heart when she got startled awake by thunder. It hit me like, “Oh my goodness these tiny bundles of joy are basically us, just with more tail.” It really doesn’t take much from us to give them a little extra shelter and safety, especially in rough weather.
This house is solid cedar, feels well-made, and the design is actually thoughtful. The feeding shelf is a nice touch (I like that it keeps food separate and easy to refresh), and the overall setup feels sturdy and weather-friendly.
Assembly was also refreshingly painless. The pieces fit well, the instructions were straightforward, and it went together quickly with basic tools. No unnecessary drama, no mystery screws that “must be decorative.”
Now the best part: I’m in a very remote area of Minnesota, and it’s already getting used daily. Watching them climb in and out and hang around the feeder has been weirdly comforting and genuinely fun.

A Deluxe Squirrel House That’s Fun to Build
I have to say, this kit was a blast to put together with our 6 year old. He had a great time putting the pieces and starting the screws. A good screwdriver was all that was needed beyond that with the pre-drilled holes.
Each of the main pieces were labeled and the illustrations were fairly helpful. There wasn’t a lot of description with the photos, which did lead to a point or two of confusion, but the overall kit is so simple that it still didn’t matter much.
It took us about 15 minutes to assemble everything and then about another 15 to stain and seal it, while I did a few other animal houses that I had been putting off.
The end result looks great! Now I just need to figure out where to put it so that we can also hang an owl house and “keep the peace”.
