A 1987 Quirky Comedy Sci-Fi Fantasy Movie I Personally Enjoy
Innerspace is about a seemingly washed-up overdrinking test pilot who signs up to be shrunk (along with his submersible craft) and injected into a rabbit to test the ability to interact with the outside world. ‘Bad guys’ attempt to steal the technology to sell on the black market, but not before the pilot is shrunk and put into a syringe. Through comical mishaps, the pilot gets injected into a random stranger who, along with the pilot’s girlfriend/reporter, try to elude the bad guys and get the test pilot back to the lab to be re-enlarged. Along with Dennis Quaid, Meg Ryan, and Martin Short are a host of actors who were popular or well known in 1987, as well as some up-and-comers. It has the Steven Spielberg signature all over it. Check out IMDB for more info on the movie.

The Blu-ray quality is pretty good. Cropped from the original 35MM “1.85:1” format to fit the 16:9 “1.87:1” modern TV format in 2015, there is minimal edge loss from the original theatrical release with no content changes I could notice.

Innerspace (at the time of this writing), could be owned for $8.99 or rented an Amazon Prime Video for $3.99. I plan to watch it more than twice, so opted to own the disc.

Hilarious 80s sci-fi comedy from Joe Dante
Decided to give this a watch after hearing so many great things about it and i wasn’t disappointed. Great 80s comedy fun with heart and a great cast with Dennis Quaid, Meg Ryan and Martin Short, who steals the show.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersSolid, entertaining sci-fi comedy from the 80's that can be watched with the family.
In 1987 I was a bunny. Let me finish. I was a bunny in a theatrical production of “Babes in the Wood”, an English folk tale. This involved hours of sitting in a hot rabbit costume backstage before being pushed out in front of an audience to hop around for a few minutes and then come back for another couple of hours.

How does this trauma relate to Innerspace (1987), a movie with Martin Short and Dennis Quaid? Well, it saved my sanity because backstage they had this rented movie showing on repeat. I remember this movie being so engaging that I almost forgot to go bun it up on at least one occasion. Unfortunately, they didn’t stagger the film so I always missed parts of it.

Years later, this now unrepressed memory popped back into my head when I saw Martin Short in Only Murders in the Building (another great show by the way), and I immediately went and bought this movie.

It holds up. It’s everything I needed it to be. It validates (almost) the brief stint as a furry. Short’s slapstick is humorous and engaging, played against the cool straight man Quaid. Now, I admit there’s 100% nostalgia going on here, but it’s arguably better than Short’s “Three Amigos” and at least as good as “Father of the Bride”, and where Quaid is concerned, I prefer this performance than “Dreamscape” and “Enemy Mine”

You don’t have to dress as a woodland creature to like this film, but it probably helps.

A Very Funny Blast From The Past!
InnerSpace is a re-make of Fantastic Voyage, but this time it takes a comic turn. When Martin Short gets injected with a miniaturized Dennis Quaid in a ship, Martin hears voices and screams “I’m possessed!” Havoc ensues, lots of laughs and a great time is had by all. Highly recommended.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersSpielberg's Fantastic Voyage
This movie was released in 1987…and many movies from the 80s show their 20+ year age but this movie does not show its age. As a true testament to Spielberg and the great actors, this movie has aged very little. If it weren’t for the very young Meg Ryan, Dennis Quaid, Martin Short and Robert Picardo, you could say that this movie is a fairly recent release.

The premise is simple. Dennis Quaid is a test pilot who has been passed up for the space program and instead is picked up by an obscure government program to pilot a submarine that is going to be miniaturized and injected into a rabbit. He has some personal problems with Meg Ryan and she dumps him. He gets miniaturized but before he can be injected into the rabbit the bad guys break into the lab to steal the technology that miniaturizes people. A lab assistant escapes with a minaturized Quaid in his pod in a syringe. Before he is killed, the assistant injects Quaid into an unsuspecting hypocondriac, Martin Short. Quaid’s pod has the capability to interface with the optic nerve and the eardrum of the person he’s injected in so he can “talk” to his host and “see” what he sees. And so, begins this wonderful adventure to get Quaid back to normal size by getting the stolen technology back, get Quaid back together with Meg Ryan, to get the bad guys, and to prove that Martin Short is not crazy hearing Quaid in his head. I won’t spoil the movie from there on — its a great ride. Oh, I will add that somewhere along the way we bump into Robert Picardo who plays “The Cowboy,” a wonderfully memorable performance by Robert Picardo as some kind of technology mercenary — Picardo commands the silver screen whenever he’s on camera –definitely worth watching for just that.

This movie was great back in the 80s and still is a great movie. Spielberg did a great job making it timeless. The special effects are still good today and Quaid, Short, Meg Ryan, Robert Picardo are great in this movie.

The movie felt very much like a modernized Fantastic Voyage — being about the inner space (the human body) only with a romantic comedy + action adventure movie mixed in.

This is definitely worth watching — its an “A” Movie from an “A” Director with “A” Actors. I will also say that this is a more innocent movie from a more innocent time in moviemaking which is a welcome break from the overly “cool” and overly “sheik” personas in today’s movies. It is a Fantastic Voyage. If you grew up in the 80s, you’ll love this.

If you’re wondering what the feel of this movie is — its very similar to Back to the Future in terms of flavor with about the same amount of adventure, a dash less comedy and a pinch more romantic comedy. This movie inspired rides at the major theme parks so it was a major production. If you have Back to the Future, you need to have Inner Space.
