Great for small spaces
Our home is very small & we lack storage space, so I am always looking for functional storage pieces. This narrow utility cart fits perfectly in our kitchen. Although it can expand to more of a square-shaped cart, we have it positioned into its narrow state. It fits nicely next to our trash can & houses several of my son’s school snacks. It’s easy for him to quickly choose the snacks he wants to pack vs. him hunting in the pantry & not being able to see the snacks on the higher shelves. I also like that this cart includes wheels for easy movement, like when we are cleaning the floors & need to move this out of the way. The smaller size makes this a versatile cart if we ever decide to use this in another room.
So many uses
I ordered this cart not really certain what I was going to do with it. When it arrived, I realized I could use it for almost anything. I put it in a small corner of my home office where I have a variety of projects and other things I intend to get to. Basically, it corralled my junk into a nice, tidy organizer. I placed it to the side of a bookshelf, and I would never have been able to find something to fit this space had it not been for this adjustable cart. However, that adjustable feature is also what I like least. It’s kind of awkward to adjust it to the same width. You have to adjust each shelf individually — kind of bang it in a little, but not so much that it’s skinnier than the shelf below it. In other words, you can’t adjust all the shelves at once, making them uniform. So you’re eyeballing it and making adjustments. My other thought was it was a little pricey! Other than those issues, this is a great shelf that you can probably find hundreds of uses for.
Nice expandable shelf system, but some assembly required.
Build wise, everything is well built. The screws and parts were all smooth and well finished and painted. The exceptions were the rails, the vertical pieces are welded on nicely, but since they were cut straight and not buffed, those ends are pointy and sharp so pay heed when assembling. The shelf is all metal, except for the castors as the wheels and housing are plastic. The castors have no rubberized surface, but they roll and swivel well, even on hardwood. The locking mechanism on the castors don’t really work on hardwood since the wheels are hard plastic and not rubberized they have no grip, so they can still be slid around. The castors also won’t swivel when locked.
Once assembled the shelves slide apart well. As long as you pushed down the little tongues to preven them from completely sliding apart, all will be fine. I only pressed down the tongues on the top and bottom shelf.
I took inventory first to make sure all of the parts were there, they included 1 extra screw for each type, so 17 long screws and 9 short screws. It’s nice that they included the extra screw. One thing, make sure you assemble this where screws can’t drop and roll under things that you can’t get things out from under.
All of the pieces are packaged in bags with their identifiers on them. Each piece also had little stickers with the identifiers on them too.
Although the tools to assemble this, you’re going to want the following:
– cordless screwdriver
– 5/32 hex bit
– razer blade or window scraper. (helpful for removing the stickers afterwards). The stickers on the shelves were very easy to remove as they were only gently affixed.
– safety gloves
Assemble the shelves first, my first two shelves were already pre-assembled so as to demonstrate how they should fit together. You’re going to have to dis-assemble them in order to remove the plastic bags first. Once assembled, push down the tongues on each end to prevent the shelves from sliding completely apart.
Next, assemble the sides. When assembling them, pay attention to the holes on the side, and make sure they’re all on the same side, otherwise you’re going to have to disassemble and then re-orient them and re-assemble them. Also make sure the holes align with the holes on the inserts. This is when I noticed that the vertical bars on the sides aren’t oriented on the same side when assembled. The top 2 sides have the vertical bars on one side, but the bottom one has it oriented on the other side. Since they are pointy and sharp, I wanted them facing inside, but I could only do that with the top 2 pieces, the bottom piece has the vertical bars facing outside for me. You can flip them around as the sides can be mounted in either orientation since the screw holes go all the way through.
When assembling the shelves onto the sides, make sure that they’re all oriented in the same direction, you don’t want to have to undo all of that to fix a shelf or 2 pointing in the wrong direction. I installed the top and bottom shelves first, as that made installing the other 2 easier. I could easily flip the shelf over to screw them down.
The castors took the longest time to assemble as the nut on the bottom is very thin, and getting the included wrench to secure them was painful. If you have a regular wrench you can use, use that instead of the included one. Unfortunately, the castors cannot be detached so that you can use a socket wrench. I had tightened them first before using the wrench, but even so, I couldn’t get it down all the way by hand.
Total time for me to assemble was 2 hours. It will probably take you less time if you follow the info I included in here. I spent a lot of time on the sides trying to figure out why the bars weren’t aligned and oriented the same way and I couldn’t figure out a way to make them all sit on the same side, so I eventually gave up.
When you’re done assembling the entire unit, make sure to go and tighten down all of the screws otherwise it will wobble quite a bit. But even after tightening down, it will still wobble somewhat since the expandable shelves aren’t super tight as they are easy to adjust. I’d recommend putting heavier items on the bottom shelves and lighter things on the top shelves. You don’t want this getting top heavy.
I’m only deducting a single star because of the vertical rails not being oriented in the same direction and for the nut on the castor being so narrow, a thicker nut would’ve still worked and would have been way easier to install.
A Little Unsteady, but Useful for Pantry Storage
To summarize: Is this a little wobbly? Yes. Does it affect my enjoyment and use of the product? Nope! But the reason for that is that I wedged this useful little storage shelf into my pantry, so it’s solid as a rock. If you’re not doing that, you may have different feelings.
This is more of a laundry or utility organizer, but I love it for pantry storage. It has four useable shelves, “fencing” on either sides (that I’ve reversed as you can see in the photos to keep my food from falling out – please ignore all the paint scuffs as we’re currently planning to repaint!), has wheels that swivel and lock, and is expandable. Quite a few bells and whistles for such a simple shelving unit.
My husband had zero issues putting this together. To quote him, “anyone who has trouble probably doesn’t assemble things very often.” Take that however you want! It took him about ten minutes start to finish, and that includes removing all the pieces from the box. It came with clear instructions and he had no problems.
Now, the cart is pretty wobbly – this is super important to mention. I didn’t care because it’s fitting between a wall and built-in shelves for me, but if you’re planning on having this as portable storage or free-floating storage, etc, I think you may run into some issues with the sturdiness. It’s just not made with the highest quality materials, and doesn’t fit together super tightly, which results in it feeling a little unsteady. If you were to leave it against a wall though, I think it does the job nicely.
I filled mine with food and it holds a very decent amount – managed to get large condiments from a bulk store on the bottom shelf, boxes of pasta in the middle, tons of cans / jars on the top and then the very top, I put a bin that I use to store our snacks. Convenient and such a space saver. I love it.
Great Design and Useful Expansion Feature, Material Feels Ligh
This expandable shelf is very flexible and versatile, with a lot of practical uses. The expanding feature is especially helpful and ended up being more functional than I expected.
At first, I wasn’t completely sure about the overall sturdiness, but once assembled it feels stable enough to hold a reasonable amount of weight for everyday storage and organization.
The casters are a nice bonus, and I was pleasantly surprised that they roll smoothly, which isn’t always true with smaller utility shelves.
There are plenty of ways to use this around the house, such as in the bathroom, kitchen, hallway, or even inside a closet.
The main reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I would have liked the material to feel a bit heavier or more robust. A sturdier build would add to the overall value and long-term durability.
Overall, it’s a useful, adaptable shelf with a clever design and lots of potential uses.
🛞Rolling Storage That Adapts to Your Space 📏
I got this expandable storage shelf for a simple reason, and probabl the same reason most people would gravitate toward it. Because it adjusts to the space you have. My apartment is older (much) and the closets and bathroom are small, so I rely on practical storage solutions to keep things organized and easy to see and find. This shelf has several features that make it genuinely useful, and here’s my observations.
Expands to fit your space
The width adjusts easily. I can make it narrow enough to slide beside the fridge or widen it when I want more storage. Being able to change the size without taking anything apart is a win, and anything else wouldn’t work for me.
Easy to move
The wheels make it simple to roll from room to room. I’ve owned plastic drawer units without wheels and they collect dust in the tracks and are awkward to shift. This cart avoids that issue.
Open access
I like being able to see everything at a glance. It keeps me from forgetting what I own and makes daily use easier. Some people prefer closed storage, but open shelving works well for me.
Straightforward assembly
I’m not mechanically inclined, but I was able to put this together by following the instructions closely. The parts are clearly labeled, which helps. It took me longer than it might take someone else, but finishing it myself felt good.
Stable when loaded
The wheels have locks, and placing heavier items on the bottom helps keep it steady. That may be obvious to some, but for people like me who struggle with spatial tasks, it’s worth mentioning.
Versatile for different uses
I already own a three tier cart from this brand and use it in the kitchen for onions, potatoes, and drinks. This expandable version is just as flexible. You can repurpose it without disassembling anything, and it’s light enough to move around or even transport in a car if needed.
Dust friendly
The sandblasted metal doesn’t attract dust the way some finishes do. I live in a dusty environment near a construction site, so this is a benefit.
There’s many storage carts to choose from (too many – like everything else these days, so much choice ). But after trying a range of products, I find myself going back to the companies that make things I like. And this shelving unit does not disappoint.
Wobbly and requires assembly
This mobile storage unit has an adjustable design, but in practice it really only adjusts in depth rather than true width and depth flexibility. The concept works by having the shelving planks slide over one another, allowing you to change the overall size. However, because there is significant friction between the boards, it is difficult to adjust the unit evenly. I found that the top section can end up wider than the bottom, which creates an unstable and awkward configuration.
Assembly is another major drawback. While all the parts are included, putting it together takes much longer than expected. The unit is made of lightweight aluminum, which is a benefit for portability, but it also contributes to the biggest problem: wobbliness. Once assembled, the cart feels unsteady, especially because it is fairly tall, roughly three and a half feet high, about the height of a kitchen countertop. With that height, any imbalance in the base makes tipping more likely, particularly if heavier items are placed on the upper shelves.
The included tools are also disappointing. The Allen key is fine, but the wrench provided for attaching the wheels is extremely poor quality and barely usable. Installing the casters is harder than it should be because they must be screwed on rather than snapped into place, which adds unnecessary frustration during setup. Overall, the unit does function and can be useful for narrow spaces or light storage, but it is not sturdy enough for heavy items, and the instability means you need to be cautious about how and where you use it.
Expandable 4-Tier Utility Cart: The storage solution that grows with your needs.
When I was shopping for a utility cart, I was primarily drawn to the style of this one—the shape and the metal bars really caught my eye. I was looking for a reliable 4-shelf cart to fit a specific spot, and because I am visually impaired, I completely missed the part of the listing that mentioned it was expandable. It was a pleasant surprise during the assembly process to realize that it could grow to fit my needs. Unlike normal utility carts that are a fixed size, this one is a very versatile piece of furniture. I know that if my needs change in the future, I can simply make it narrower or expand it to its full width for a completely different use.
The expansion works by sliding shelf A and shelf B into each other. On the bottom of the shelf, there is a metal tab that you need to bend with a pair of pliers to act as a safety catch. This prevents the shelves from pulling completely apart. It is worth noting that there is no locking mechanism to hold a specific width, so the cart can slide shut if you lean against it. To fix this, I used fabric file boxes on the shelves to act as a physical block. When fully extended, these boxes fit beautifully and give the cart a very elegant, polished look. As a bonus, keeping my hair products in these boxes prevents dust from collecting on my serums and brushes, which saves a lot of cleaning time.
The assembly process was another area where I was pleasantly surprised. Most build-it-yourself furniture has poorly written instructions, but these were exceptionally well done. As someone with dexterity issues, I usually struggle quite a bit with assembly, so it was a relief to find this relatively easy and quick to put together. The clarity of the steps made a huge difference for me. While the cart can be a little wobbly on the uneven floors of an older building, the storage boxes help keep everything weighted and secure.
This cart is currently the perfect height for my hair care routine, keeping all my brushes, dyes, and supplies tidy and accessible. The fact that it isn’t limited to just one size makes this an excellent, adaptable find for anyone’s home.
Exactly what I needed
This is a great cart. Love that it can expand to fit perfectly the space between w/d. Super easy to put together and solid. Would be even better if came in more colors…
Nice Cart for a Narrow Space - And It's Adjustable
I have a narrow space between a laundry sink and a storage cabinet – this shelf will be perfect for that space. I need to make a slight modification to the sink support to get it to fit, so I can’t show it in place. I do show two pic’s of it assembled, with a bag of wood chips on one of the shelves. The key thing here is to be able to use the space! How this works:
* If you have a narrow space that you might be able to put some tall things in, like brooms, mops, etc. – that might be good use of that space – but I have those things in another place. This little narrow shelf will fit right in there and will give me 4 shelves of space! And I can keep things that I will use in the sink: cleaners, sponges, spray bottles, etc.
* The unit simply slides open to fit the space – cool!!! See the Amazon listing for the range of narrowest to widest.
* It rolls easily on the casters, so if you couldn’t easily reach something in the back, you could just pull it out and get that item, and then slide it back in. Two of the casters lock if you want to secure it in place. (Be sure to put those two on the same end and face them out so that you can lock and unlock as needed.
I’m super pleased with the construction. As you start to assemble it, it’s pretty wobbly, but as each piece gets connected and tightened it stiffens right up. I would recommend putting heavier items on the lower shelves and then lighter items as you move to the top. This is a general recommendation with any shelf like this. It’s rated at about 25#/shelf and that seems reasonable to me. I might suggest going a bit lighter on the top shelf, just because anything gets “tippier” the taller it is!
This handy cart gets 5 Stars. It’s sturdy, rolls smoothly, is a unique solution for storage in narrow spaces, and the fit and finish were really nice.
