Solid Build
I really hate the flimsy plastic compost bins that are everywhere. They always seem to break down on me. I like that this one is steel, solidly built and weighty, and has perforations for airflow. I’m looking forward to putting this outside when the snow finally gives my yard back…A very good get!
Sturdy. Does not require tools to assemble. Package arrived rattling, with screws and wing nuts moving around in the box. Everything was present and undamaged. The bin has an open bottom, a strong lid, and a little door for removing compost from the bottom on one side. It holds lots of leaves and biodegradable kitchen scraps. It looks neat in the garden and has not been penetrated by undesired wildlife.
Well constructed with heavy, durable steel. Provides excellent air circulation. Top fits perfectly. Easy to assemble. Easy to install. Size is large and adequate for a few months composting before needing to empty.
This is a good deal if you don’t intend to turn your compost pile much. If you do, you’ll need a pitchfork or shovel.
I wish it came with a bottom and wheels for portability, but I’ll just have to drag my yard trimmings to the bin.
The volume:cost ratio is better than the plastic one in the photo. I did have to sacrifice the easy rotate option though. The plastic one is also better sealed. The moisture inside won’t evaporate as fast and it retains heat better for faster decomposition.
I would assume once I fill this bin, the pile will be large enough to retain a lot of its own heat. Still, I wouldn’t expect a lot of decomposition in the winter.
There were some slight dents and scratches from shipping but I didn’t get this for the aesthetic. I will paint over some scratches so the steel isn’t exposed and start rusting.
The shipping is pretty compact for the size. The assembly only took a few minutes and was bigger than I expected.
The steel is thick enough to handle compost with ease. The door at the bottom will bend If you accidentally lightly kick it. I know this from experience.
