Surprisingly Good Metal Detector. Worth it!
I wasn’t sure what to expect at this price point, but this metal detector has really impressed me! It was easy to assemble right out of the box, and the controls are intuitive — perfect for beginners but still useful for more experienced hunters.
It’s lightweight and comfortable to use for long sessions, and the adjustable stem lets you dial in the fit perfectly. Detection is solid; it consistently found coins, bottle caps, and other metal targets just a few inches underground. The display is clear, and it’s easy to tell what the detector is picking up.
Overall, this is a fantastic value for the money. Whether you’re just getting into metal detecting or want a reliable second unit, this one delivers. I’d definitely recommend it!
Functional metal detector, great for beginners
I have another metal detector that costs several times more than this. The build quality of this CKG detector is definitely not as good; this is a starter metal detector and the materials used are basic, but everything is functional, this is not a junky detector. But it allowed me to have my grandkids with me without risking my more expensive detector.
It assembles quicky and without any tools and the two 9-volt batteries are included. The shaft is a bit short, I’m 5’9″ and I had to bend down a little when scanning and homing in on a hit, so I question the use of “Adult” in the ad. It’s light weight, which is perfect for my grandkids. The kit comes with a decent pair of wired headphones, a small scoop for digging in soil and a large sand scoop. It also came a “treasure hunt” map-book, two mechanical lead pencils for notetaking and some “coins” that you can hide in the yard for fun.
It’s easy to use, there is a small LCD display which you control using the buttons on the display panel. The menu system is reasonably intuitive. As far as I can tell, it’s pretty accurate, it signaled low quality for iron/steel items and higher quality for silver and gold. Pinpointing the target is a little harder than my other detector, but not overly so. Battery life seems to be pretty good.
Everything fits into a very sturdy bag that has a couple of zippered pockets for the small parts. The bag has handles and two adjustable straps for carrying over the shoulder or backpack style. For a reasonable price, you get everything you need to get started with detecting.
Super cool detector — accurate depth and metal ID actually work
This CKG metal detector is honestly super cool and way more capable than I expected for a starter kit. The LCD display clearly shows how deep the object is and gives you a metal type indication, which makes hunting a lot more fun and less guesswork-heavy. It’s surprisingly accurate once you get the hang of it.
The 10″ waterproof coil works great on grass, dirt, and damp ground, and the included headphones, shovel, trowel, and carry bag make it feel like a complete setup right out of the box. Setup was easy, sensitivity adjustments are straightforward, and it even has a coin game mode that’s great for learning.
Whether you’re just getting into treasure hunting or want something accurate without spending a fortune, this detector delivers. Fun, informative, and very satisfying to use.
CKG Metal Detector Starter Kit Delivers Huge Value for Beginners and Backup Use
This is a five-star detector because the value you’re getting for roughly $165 is difficult to argue with. I’m an experienced detectorist and already own higher-end machines, but I wanted something I could confidently hand to a friend or newcomer without risking a $1,000-plus detector. After putting real field time on this unit in Arkansas, I’m still impressed, and I can now speak meaningfully to battery life, waterproof performance, discrimination, and pinpointing.
Pros
* Excellent real-world battery life (2x 9V): I expected the 9V battery setup to be a drawback, but it turned out to be a strength. Between my brother-in-law, my sister, and myself, we ran this detector for roughly a week at about five hours per day without needing to change batteries once. That is genuinely impressive.
* Complete kit for the money: The packaging feels thoughtful and secure, with foam inserts rather than loose packing. The kit itself is stacked for the price: detector, waterproof coil (the coil is waterproof; the control box is not marketed as submersible), headphones, carrying case, sand scoop, small digging tool, spare coil parts, manual, and the kids treasure kit extras.
* Discrimination that actually helps: Early on, I was digging a lot of sinkers and pull tabs. Once I started using discrimination more deliberately, it did a respectable job of reducing obvious junk and made the hunt more efficient.
* Waterproof coil confirmed in use: We used this detector in a drawdown lake, and the coil handled wet ground and shallow water exposure without any issues.
* Beginner-friendly controls: Sensitivity, volume, backlight, discrimination, and a built-in pinpoint mode make this approachable for someone completely new to detecting without feeling stripped down.
Cons
* Pinpoint precision is limited: The pinpoint mode is accurate to roughly a five-inch radius. It’s helpful, but it does not replace a dedicated handheld pinpointer if you want tight recoveries.
* Modest practical depth: In my hands, detection depth feels to be around five inches on typical targets. That’s expected at this price point, but it’s worth stating clearly.
* Coil ear/bolt connection could be better: Even when snugged down responsibly, the coil attachment does not feel as tight or confidence-inspiring as I would prefer. Not a deal-breaker, but it is the least premium aspect of the build.
* Video limitation note: I’m limited by Amazon on video file size, so the uploaded video cuts off earlier than I would like.
Bottom Line
As a starter detector, backup unit, or dedicated loaner for friends and family, this remains an easy five out of five. The kit value is real, battery life exceeded expectations, the coil is genuinely usable around shallow water, and discrimination makes a noticeable difference once you start dialing out junk. As long as expectations are realistic regarding pinpoint tightness and depth, most buyers will be very pleased with what they get for the price.
