Save the Bees!
These yellow floats are great for protecting honeybees from drowning. I have two in my dog’s wading pool, and the bees use them to either climb out of the pool (and thus not drown) or even perch on them and drink water through the perforations.
Have a lot of bees landing on it they are getting used where to land and some stay for a long time resting from the long flight and need a drink love watching them enjoy this in a 5gallon food grade bucket that I keep filling to top as they can drink it down in a couple days. Insects and fish love it, but so does algae!
This small floating platform works great for insects to access the water in my backyard pond without risk of drowning. It also provides cover for small fish from predation, which is an added benefit. However, it is an absolute algae magnet. Hair algae loves to grow in the gaps and around the outside, and it’s very difficult to clean each one out. The individual cells create a lot of surface area for algae to cling to. Because it reduces the amount of direct sunlight underneath it and algae prefers less light, the algae strands end up a lot larger than in other parts of the pond. If you do go to the effort of cleaning it, the algae still leaves a green or brown film on the plastic that is not exactly the most aesthetic. I’m not sure there’s any way to redesign this to be less of a perfect anchor for algae. My only thought is that a different color plastic might show the algae less, but the yellow might help attract insects to land on it, so I don’t know if that’s the answer. I recommend this product if a) you don’t care about the algae, or b) you treat your water source with an algaecide. I gave up on keeping the pontoon nice and pretty and just remove excess algae when it starts to get long.
Works absolutely great! Been using it for over a year in a birdbath. Usually 50+ bees on it during the hot summer. No real issues with bees drowning. Stays outside all year. Good quality and definitely recommend.
