We Hope the Owls Like It!
We installed this cedar owl box in our backyard and watched how it held up through a few wet weeks and breezy afternoons. It felt solid to the touch, lined up easily, and the sloped roof kept the interior noticeably drier than our old birdhouses.
Putting the box together took only minutes with the included screws, and the finish blends into garden settings without looking overdone. The entrance and roomy interior make it inviting for medium-sized owls, though we noticed the opening is smaller than some species prefer. Ventilation works well to prevent dampness, but the kit’s wood chips arrived loose, so we sealed them before use.
Easy assembly, quality produc
I have one other owl house that I think is pretty good, but these two are better. It is such a pleasure to construct something where everything fits and, importantly, all the holes line up. The instructions were so-so, but this was pretty intuitive to put together.
I was impressed by the density and appearance of the wood, and I’m hoping that the large holes will appeal to the Great Horned Owls that are very common around here. Nesting materials are provided and the venting cuts look fine, with the extended roof a nice touch to help keep the interior dry. I think that a ring at the top of the house would help for mounting, but the two interior drilled holes should be fine. We shall see in the spring.
A Charming Project for Nature Lovers
This is a very wellmade owl house kit, and genuinely fun to put together. It comes with everything you need for assembly, plus clear, easytofollow instructions. I built one by the fire on a snowy day in about 25 minutes, and I’m not especially adept at this kind of project — so that should tell you how approachable it is.
The kit includes two boxes, which is great if you have space to spread them out or want to accommodate different owl territories. In my area, we have Western Screech Owls, so I’ll be placing the houses widely apart on our seven acres to give them comfortable options.
The cedar pieces are sturdy, nicely cut, and fit together cleanly with pre-assembly aids. Once assembled, the box feels solid and weatherready, with ventilation, the ability to clean-out, and a roof design that should help keep it dry.
This would make an awesome family project or a thoughtful gift for any nature lover. It’s satisfying to build, looks great once finished, and offers real habitat value for local wildlife.
So simple to bed. Fully functional
These boxes are almost as awesome to build as they are to look at. Crazy, that something so functional is so simple. Awesome pattern. Super easy to assemble and build. Instructions are ok. They do say there are two of each side panel which isn’t correct. But it wasn’t hard to figure it out. In the attached picture of instructions I noted in red the ones that have one each house; not two as listed. All the holes are very drilled with the outer side countersunk so the screws go in flush. Mini screwdriver included with each set with the screws. I did use a drill. Only takes a few minutes to assemble each owl box. The wood goes through a process, I believe they called it carbonized, not really sure what it is, but the wood is gorgeous and looks much more durable to handle the weather. The center front of the nesting box has the ability to swing open once the central screw is removed. It’s hinged on the two upper side screws. Allowing them to be charged out easily. Allows inside access. These are going on posts, which haven’t been installed yet. Can’t show them actually up. But can show size comparison to our larger chicken that has to be involved in everything. Also attaching pictures that shows it opened up. And pine shavings that also comes with it for nesting materials. Makes it all smell so lovely at unboxing. Two complete sets for two complete owl boxes.
Simplistic and sturdy
These two owl boxes are absolutely adorable! The instructions were detailed, easy to follow and also include pictures, which is a big help. They were incredibly easy and simple to put together and took no time at all. The wood is sturdy, the staining is beautiful, and the craftsmanship feels very well done. They’re even cuter in person than I expected, and I’m so excited to start using them. Such a great find!
INSTRUCTIONS are so easy, a 10 year old with limited supervision could assemble!
TWO!!!!
This was beyond simple to assemble. (Note: the directions mention two of each side piece; this is incorrect. It’s exactly as it looks: two side pieces total.)
I used the small screwdriver included and really liked the large, bulb-shaped handle. It fit my hand perfectly. For the second box, I used an electric screwdriver; both worked perfectly.
I assembled the second box in under seven minutes (going slow) and the first box in under ten minutes. The pre-drilled holes all line up, and the screws are the correct size. The instructions include both photo diagrams and photographs showing how to assemble and mount the box.
One pleasant surprise was the front panel: when you remove the bottom screw, the entire front lifts and pivots upward, making it easy to clean out.
I also like that there are small gaps in the back corners for rain drainage, preventing any water buildup that could harm baby owls.
The roof is adorable. It’s a single piece but carved to look like individual roof shingles (clearly a lot of thought went into the design).
I do wonder about raccoons being able to reach inside, though I’m not sure how owls prevent this with any owl box.
It comes pre-stained and smells SOOOOO good.
This is a great project for young people learning to assemble practical wooden items. I think a 10-year-old, with adult supervision, could assemble this with little to no help, even with minimal experience, thanks to the comfortable screwdriver grip and clearly aligned pre-drilled holes. Also, this might be a great project for the elderly, still interested in crafts, to gift during holidays. Very easy to assemble.
I have not mounted this to the tree yet. We also have other wildlife, and I want to be mindful of each space already designated by wildlife entitlement.
