BACKGROUND
This came up as a Vine suggestion. Around a year ago, I replaced the Jenn-Air gas cooktop in my kitchen with a Electrolux one that looks to be of very similar look to this burner (albeit a lot larger and with more burners), so I thought it might be interesting to compare the construction of the two.
INITIAL OBSERVATIONS
It is noticeably less robust than the Electrolux unit — the thickness of the sheet metal is definitely less. When put on a granite countertop and resting on it’s feet, there is a slight wobble, but the feet are plastic, so you could file / sand a bit off the other feet to make it more even (or maybe add a thin washer / shim under the one short foot). If you are mounting it inside a countertop, the length of the feet don’t matter because it is not supported by the feet and is instead supported by the edge.
Although it does have a cast iron burner grate, it is noticeably thinner material than either the Jenn-Air or the Electrolux.
Removing the plastic cover over the gas inlet port was a bit problematic. It is recessed into a slot in the sheetmetal of the bottom of the unit and there is not really enough room to grip it with pliers. I ended up jabbing a knife through the center of it and using the knife as basically a “screwdriver” to turn the plastic cover. Crude, but it worked…
Installing the right angle adapter to go to a hose proved a bit problematic because of the small space mentioned above. I found that an old style monkey wrench with the jaws oriented vertical (NOT a pipe wrench) could fit in there and grab the sides well enough to tighten it.
COMPLAINTS / ISSUES
When trying to “purchase” the item, it would not allow the item to be shipped to an alternate delivery site like the UPS Store, claiming that it has hazardous contents. I can understand it not allowing the Amazon Locker because of the size, but there is nothing in this package that would require HAZMAT shipping. I have to avoid USPS shipping to my home address because the lazy USPS worker will not do it and just returns the items to the original shipper (or they disappear completely). Amazon shipping is VERY reliable though. Since it gave me a delivery date of the next day, I *hoped* that it would use Amazon shipping. The seller should fix their product specifications so that Amazon won’t think that it contains hazardous materials.
IMPRESSIONS
My wife often complains when I’m cooking things inside the house because the hot peppers that I cook with the dishes will make her start coughing even if she is in the other side of the house. The exhaust fan on the cooktop exhausts to the outside, so there *should* be plenty of ventilation. The fumes don’t bother me, but then again, my wife complains about EVERYTHING. So, I hooked this up to a gas port that I had in my BBQ / grilling / outdoor kitchen area. I used the cooktop with a cast iron skillet to blacken a steak. It worked well for it. The BTUs were not as high as the wok burner on the Electrolux unit, but were acceptable.
CONCLUSION
The product was acceptable for my needs and worked well enough. Although the cast iron was noticeably thinner than on the Electrolux, it is not excessively so. As such, I’m going to rate this as “slightly above average” (3.5-stars). I believe this to be fair since I would have only rated the Electrolux as 4.0-stars.
