My old house did not have the third wire to link other smoke sensors on other floors together. The app on my Android works great with notifications when I test the unit. Keep the local emergency fire department number (local 911 emergency #) handy on your phone as if you get a notification that there may be an issue at your home, calling 911 will get you the local service which would greatly increase the response time. I can also unlock the front door remotely using another app so short of having a full time monitoring service, this is the best that I can do when I am not at home. Very easy to install and link to app but I had to change the plug. It does not replace a monitored service by any means but for us, it is better than nothing! With the proper wiring, it can be linked to many monitored alarm systems. The carbon monoxide feature is crucial if you have any fuel (natural gas, propane, oil etc) devices in your home including attached garages (many have died because a car was running in the garage for some reason). It could save your life from an odorless, invisible killer so the added cost is nothing! The unit lasts 10 years so it is a bargain device that you have to have in good working order. The smart features are a bonus that may come in handy when you are not at home.
Excellent replacement for interconnected, wired detectors! Our house is 10 years old, and recently all of our smoke detectors have reached end of life. We have a fully connected system, with the hub outside the master bedroom. All Kidde. When I went to replace, we wanted to stay within the Kidde ecosystem, but wanted wireless monitoring, and built in CO2 detection. This is the perfect model! Super easy setup! We did have to change wiring harnesses, but it take 5 mins with the power off. If you can hand tighten nuts and match colors, you can easily do this yourself! Pro tip: Download the Kidde app BEFORE you install and it will make setup a breeze. All in, I had the old one down and new one up in 10 minutes. Can’t beat that for peace of mind. And I love the fact that these come with a battery backup, so you are still protected even if the power goes out. They’re pricey, but they last a long time and have all the features you want. I’ve already ordered two more!
Previously tried this app enabled detector and had nothing but issues and sent it back. Later discovered other issues with items connected to my IOT network within the mesh system and figured maybe these detectors don’t like to be on an IOT network either. IOT networks are not the way to go on a TPlink system. I reset everything and removed the IOT network so everything is back on a normally mesh setup and this detector has been working great ever since. When it was on IOT it constantly said it was disconnected from the network and lost wifi connection. Support said it should work fine but it did not. I even connected it to the non-IOT wifi channel and it still would not stay connected. I decided to give it another try and so far so good. Maybe I got two bad detectors before or this one has a newer firmware in it but regardless it works great now. Hopefully it remains and I can have a way of being notified remotely in the event of a fire event.
Contrary to other reports, I found these easy to install. I download the Kidde App and create my “home” location. I then selected “add devices”. A barcode on the detector and in printed material guided me through the installation. Once connected to power, instructions were provided to establish a Bluetooth connection. For the first detector I provide my wifi information and allowed it to be saved. The four others connected to the same wifi network. Each of the five required a firmware update which was easily installed using the app.
A minor inconvenience was that I had to turn on don’t beep at night for each detector and set the hours. It would be nice to have an option to do it once for all.
I bought the Kidde Hardwired Kidde App Enabled Smart Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector as a replacement for the expiring hardwired Nest Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector we had in the upstairs hallway, because of its good reviews (especially compared to the alleged replacement for the Nest line).
I also thought that it would be the first of a series of Kidde smoke/CO detectors for our home, replacing all of the Nest devices. Unfortunately, it won’t connect to other Kidde detectors without wiring, unlike the Nest products which used wireless connectivity. This oversight was obviously my fault, not reading enough and trusting the wrong sources. It’s not right, but I’m taking a star off because of my disappointment.
On the other hand, in the month and a half that it’s been installed, it hasn’t had any false alarms in the middle of the night like the users of the aforementioned Nest ‘replacement’ have complained. Kidde has a great reputation, it’s app is easy to use, and allows a convenient test and pinging of the alarm. I only wish it would wirelessly nw with a series of other Kidde detectors.
Highly recommend the Kidde Hardwired Kidde App Enabled Smart Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector, as a standalone detector, or with other wired Kidde detectors.
