I’m honestly a little confused by some of the statements in other reviews. So, just to clear things up.
This is 0.04″ (18 gauge) steel that is powder coated white. Due to the coating it’s impossible to tell if it’s galvanized or not. 18 gauge is pretty thin for access panels (most of my other ones are 15 gauge or thicker), so it feels pretty light and flimsy, but looks really nice. Other than the 5+ spots where something was on the panel when they powdercoated it (hard to photograph, but very visible with a light close to the wall).
The whole thing is metal (one review said the frame is plastic, but it is metal). Also pay close attention to the dimensions in the listing photos. I got the 12×12″ door, and had I cut a 12×12″ opening I would have needed some shims or spacers to hold this in place as it’s only 11.625″ at the little lip that runs around the outside of the frame.
The door fit is good, there is very little gap around it (another panel I have has a good ” gap at the top). It came very well packaged, with corner protectors, as the corners are pretty sharp, not rounded like most other access panels.
As the listing says this does not need a key to open, in fact I can open it with just my finger. One interesting feature is that looking at it, you would think it needs a key, the slot has keyways and looks like it needs a key. So, while not secure, that may deter people from even trying to open it.
I got this for a plumbing manifold in my bathroom wall, so I’m actually glad I don’t even need a screwdriver if I need to get into it to shut off water real quick.
Taking a start off for the blemishes in the powdercoat and that they call this thick metal when it is the thinnest metal i have ever seen on an access panel (I have more than 4 in my current house, they are all 15 gauge (1.5mm) or thicker).
Easy access.
Really liked this panel. I needed an access panel to cover an opening in drywall to allow easy access to plumbing. This panel looks and functions very well and was very easy to install.
Price/Value:
The value for this is worth it. There are attributes that add up to its price. Things like paintable access panel, fire resistant, and quality of the material for this product. I’d say it’s a perfect price.
Durability:
This looks neat. The material used for the access panel looks solid. I currently don’t have any issues with the structure. It feels firm. It even has fire resistance, so it won’t go down easily.
Practicality/Usability:
The access panel is easy to install. It’s very useful has seamless welding and surface painting that helps prevent corrosion. This is very useful for a lot of situations I might encounter. Other things, like being a freely paintable access panel and using a screwdriver to unlock the access panel, so you don’t have to worry about knowing where the key for it is.
Features:
The material, galvanized steel has good fire resistance. The material for this helps out in many situations where there’s an electric short circuit. The galvanized steel being a good fire resistance material can prevent the chances of having a fire.
Looks:
The appearance is good for an access panel since it’d be unusual if the access panel had a very colorful theme. The paintable access panel is there for you if you somehow don’t like this simple design. It’s very basic, but it doesn’t look bad.
Warranty:
The warranty for this comes from Amazon, the 30-day warranty. Besides that, I noticed the 24/7 costumer service. It says that they’ll assist you with any issue you’re having or any questions you have on the product.
I recently installed this 12×12 access panel in my drywall, and it’s been a solid choice. The heavy-duty metal construction feels sturdy, and the 1mm thickness does its job well. I appreciate how the panel fits flush with the wall, making it less noticeable. The screwdriver latch is easy to use and holds the panel securely in place.
