The body’s oxygen requirement

The human organism needs approx 400 l oxygen (O2) (source: Rosemarie Baumann, Physiologie). Oxygen keeps the body’s cells alive and functional. In order to transport this amount of oxygen, a transport material is required, the hemoglobin. The hemoglobin contained in the red blood cells stores the oxygen. The organs are supplied with oxygen via the bloodstream.

How is oxygen saturation determined?

Oxygen saturation can be measured without taking a blood sample. The color of the blood allows conclusions to be drawn about the oxygen saturation:

  • Light red: high oxygen saturation
  • Dark red: low oxygen saturation

The oxygen saturation indicates Information about the percentage of hemoglobin in the arterial blood that is loaded with oxygen. It is therefore an important parameter for assessing respiratory function. The following symptoms are more common in people with a low oxygen saturation level: shortness of breath, increased heart rate, drop in performance, nervousness and sweating.

A pulse oximeter is useful for high-risk patients such as:

  • People with heart disease
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Bronchial asthma
  • Athletes and healthy people who move at great heights (e.g. mountaineers, skiers or sports pilots)

Measuring range

The pulse oximeter can be used in the measuring range of:

  • SpO₂: 70 – 100%, pulse: 30 – 250 beats / minute

The following measurement accuracy is achieved: b>

  • SpO₂: 70 – 100%, ± 2%, pulse: 30 – 250 bpm, ± 2 beats / minute

Important b>: Do not use the pulse oximeter with bandages, nail polish, or other cosmetics. A measurement can only be made when the measuring finger is exposed.

In healthy people, the oxygen saturation is in the range of approx. 94% to 99% (source: based on “Windisch W et al. S2k guideline: Non-invasive and invasive ventilation as a therapy for chronic respiratory failure Revision 2017; Pneumology 2017; 71: 722795 “).
