The Tornado was born from a composite project between Italy, Germany and the UK for producing a high performance multi-wheel combat aircraft. However, the development of a modern state-of-the-art aircraft that was able to perform strike missions at low altitude. This need has been covered by the development of a two-motor combat aircraft with a variable flywing. The Tornado GR. 1 (Ground Attack/Reconnaissance) was the first version accepted by the Royal Air Force in the early 80s. In 1996, the Tornado was made to size 4 standards, which is characterised by improved operability, new avionics systems for navigation and the introduction of new “on-board” technologies. These systems enable effective identification and tracking of goals and weapon management of the new generation of weapons such as Paveway IV bombs and Storm Shadow Crossing Rockets.
